Bogota cycling values
A recent study shows that the 3,3% cycling share in Bogota, capital of Colombia, represents a sink of 55.000 Ton CO2. If these avoided carbon emission could be traded as carbon credits, it would provide an annual feed of US$ 1 million for funding investments in cycling infrastructure.
Investments in the connectivity and coverage of the cycling network will attract new cyclists shifting from the use of busses and cars. In Bogota the current climate value of cycling is defined by its competitive mode, the already climate efficient Transmilenio bus system. Shift from car to bicycle would reduce 8 times more per passenger kilometre. Corrected for these effects, a 10% cycling share in Bogota is expected to avoid and reduce 0,4 Mton CO2, a further increase to 20% would primarily substitute car trips thus avoid and reduce to 1,4 Mton CO2.
